Sunderland are reportedly looking of signing former Chelsea striker Franco di Santo

Sunderland are reportedly looking at the prospect of signing former Chelsea striker Franco di Santo from Werder Bremen.

The Argentine striker did not fare well during his time in English football, but this largely appears to have been the result of not getting regular opportunities. Since moving to Werder Bremen on a free transfer in 2013,di Santo has been playing regularly and this has contributed to an immense run of form. After having scored only four goals in his debut season in the Bundesliga, it looks like the 26-year-old has finally settled in the German league.

He now has scored 13 goals in just 26 appearances. This record sees him placed as one of the top scorers in German football began with the likes of Thomas Müller and Robert Lewandowski. These are players of considerable quality anddi Santo is finally showing signs of matching them. He could be available on a relatively low transfer fee given that his contract is set to end soon. Werder Bremen have spoken with confidence that they would be able to tie down the player on a new long-term contract, but the options fordi Santo are now plenty with the summer transfer window fast approaching. He could be available for around £ 8 million and Premier League outfit Sunderland are keen to take advantage of this relatively cheap alternative.

The future of the club in the English top division remains under doubt since they are nowhere clear of the relegation zone.Di Santo’s time in English football ended successfully after he managed to lift the FA Cup in his final season with Wigan. However, since the striker left Wigan on a free transfer it is almost looking like déjà vu for Werder Bremen, who are fifth in the Bundesliga after 29 matches.
